Inhibition of active sodium transport in the isolated frog skin.
T HE LOW concentration of sodium inside most cells appears to result from an active outward transport of sodium (1-s). Since it is technically difficult to study active sodium transport in muscle and nerve, a simpler system in which such transport occurs may be examined with profit. It has long been known that an electrical potential difference (p.d.) may be measured across the isolated frog sk...
متن کاملThe Effect of Calcium on Sodium Transport by Frog Skin
Calcium added to the solution bathing the outside of isolated frog skin caused a reversible decrease in net sodium transport across the skin. At constant sodium concentration, the inhibition of transport increased with increasing calcium concentration, but approached a limiting value. This maximum degree of inhibition was found to depend on sodium concentration; sodium transport could be inhibi...
متن کاملComparison between active transport of T1+, K+ and Rb+ across the isolated short-circuited frog skin.
Active transport of T1+ by frog skin was compared with transport of K+ and Rb+. T1+ was transported actively (using a Na,K-ATPase) by the epithelium and the adrenaline-stimulated glands. In the epithelium, K+, T1+ and Rb+ competed for transport in the ratio 1:1.7:0.9; in the glands the ratio was 1:1:1.
متن کاملOn the Nature of the Resting Frog Skin Potential
Investigations on the electrical properties of frog muscle, nerve, and skin belong to the oldest in the history of bioelectricity. Interest in the nature of the resting P.D. of frog skin was heightened by the discovery that there occurs in the epidermis of this tissue "active ion transport" (Huf, 1935; 1936; Ussing, 1949), suggesting a possible relationship between the electrical and the chemic...
متن کاملEffects of Metabolic I N H I B I T O R S and Drugs on Ion Transport and Oxygen Consumption in Isolated Frog Skin* by Ernst G. Huf,
Active ion (NaCl) transport across isolated frog skin is discussed in relation to sodium and potassium composition and to O3 consumption of skin. A distinction is made between processes in skin related to "unidirectional active ion transport" and processes related to "maintenance electrolyte equilibrium;" i.e., ionic composition of skin. Several metabolic inhibitors were found that could be use...
